Kurzfassung:
In this essay, I situate Howard Jacobson within the distinct and oft-conflicting Jewish and English literary traditions. I analyze Jacobson’s unique Jewish voice, his use of Yiddish and ‘cod Yiddish’ — a form of imitation Yiddish — as his expression of Anglo-Jewish identity, integration, social exclusion, generational change, and the globalization of Jewish culture. As he tests the limits and contours of a Jewish way of speaking, Jacobson has established himself as an authoritative figure at the forefront of the Anglo-Jewish dialogue within the post-imperial cultural landscape.
