Abstract:
A revised version of a paper presented at a conference in Halle, 2002. A joint commission of German and Israeli scholars, meeting in 1981-85, found that German history textbooks presented Jews almost solely as objects of persecution and not as autonomous subjects who often had good relations with the surrounding society and played an active and positive role in the political, financial, and cultural history of Germany and of Europe. An examination of textbooks in use today shows that although they devote considerably more space to Jewish history, especially the Holocaust, they still fail to acquaint students with the positive sides of that history as recommended by the commission.
