Abstract:
In 1919-20, fear of Bolshevism swept over Europe and North America and combined with the traditional "Jewish conspiracy" myth (encouraged by the appearance of the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" in English and the prominence of Jews in left-wing circles in England) to produce a fear of the "Jewish Bolshevik." Surveys the activities of communist and radical Jews in Britain during and just after World War I, concluding that their views were not representative of most Jews (even the working class) in Russia or Britain, who feared Bolshevism though still preferring it to the antisemitism of the Whites.
