Abstract:
A revised version of a paper presented at the conference "The Final Solution: Origins and Implementation", London, January 1992. In the early years of communist rule in Poland, the issue of the attitude of Poles to the extermination of the Jews was subjected to the canons of Marxist-Leninist orthodoxy. During the period of the nationalist communist regime (1956-1970s), the subject was taboo. Only with the rise of the Solidarity movement was the question seriously discussed. Most of the writings on Polish-Jewish relations during the Second World War were published either immediately after the war or clandestinely, and openly only in recent years. The main expression has been in poetry (by Czesław Miłosz, Władysław Broniewski, Mieczysław Jastrun, Jerzy Ficowski) but there are also several prose works - Jerzy Andrzejewski's novella "Wielki Tydzień" ("Holy Week"), Andrzej Szczypiorski's "Początek" ("The Beginning"), and Jaroslaw Rymkiewicz's "Umschlagplatz".
