Abstract:
The influx of Jews into Russian cultural life in the early 20th century brought about a rejection of them on the part of the Russian intelligentsia, even by people considered philosemitic. Describes two incidents: the Chirikov incident, when the philosemitic writer Yevgenii Chirikov was accused of antisemitism following his reproaches to some Russian-Jewish authors, and the conflict which developed between Berdyaev and the editorial staff of the philosemitic literary collection "Shchit, " which rejected an article contributed by the former as not philosemitic enough; Berdyaev allegedly reacted to this with the phrase: "It is not the task of the Jew Pozner to censure a Russian writer." Concludes that the Russian intelligentsia of that period was not prepared to accept Jewish intellectuals as an integral part of their world.
