Kurzfassung:
Based on questionnaires completed by 20 Belorussian Jewish communists who were trapped behind enemy lines during 1941-43, interned in the Minsk ghetto, and in 1942-43 left the ghetto and joined the partisans, as well as on archival material. Describes the aborted attempts of the respondents to escape from Minsk before the Nazis came; life in the ghetto; the establishment of the resistance organization in the ghetto, in which many of the respondents took part; and the participation of Jews, including the respondents, in the Soviet partisan movement in the Minsk area. Some of those who managed to escape from the ghetto were not admitted to partisan units or were even killed by antisemitic partisans. After the war, Soviet official historiography neglected the participation of Jews in the partisan movement.
