Abstract:
Portugal was not regarded by Jewish refugees as a possible haven, but rather as an important transit point on their way to the Americas. Portugal was reluctant to admit foreigners into the country, although the motives of Salazar and his officials were more isolationist than antisemitic. Nonetheless, some Portuguese ambassadors and consuls disregarded their instructions and allowed many Jewish refugees into Portugal - e.g. Alberto da Veiga Simões, ambassador to Germany, and Aristides de Sousa Mendes, consul in Bordeaux. In stark contrast with other neutral countries, such as Brazil, the Portuguese consular corps proved to be free of antisemitic sentiments and sensitive to the fate of Jews.
