Abstract:
Reactions of Agudath Israel leaders in Israel to the Warsaw ghetto uprising ranged from praise by Benjamin Mintz to criticism by Rabbi Moshe Blau, who considered it a suicidal act. Since a majority in the party supported Blau's view and exalted spiritual over physical resistance, the party chose to ignore the fact that members of Agudath Israel in Warsaw took part in the uprising. Focuses on the case of Rabbi Menahem Ziembe, who issued a halakhic ruling in favor of resistance, took part in the fighting, and was killed. Agudath Israel denies his role in the uprising, as well as that of other members of the party in Warsaw.
