Abstract:
Refers to the "historians' debate" in West Germany, and the call for a moratorium on discussion of Germany's responsibility for Nazi crimes. Argues that the origins of the Holocaust lie in traditional German antisemitism and the rise of fascism. Ernst Nolte and Joachim Fest compare the extermination of Jews to Stalin's massacres, and claim that Hitler decided to destroy the Jews because he identified them with communism. Rejects Nolte's tendency to blame the Jews for their own destruction. Examines the historical circumstances in 1941 and the decision to carry out the Final Solution, concluding that the new theories were created for the purpose of anti-communist propaganda.
