Abstract:
A study based on Chaim Barlas's archive, held in private hands in Israel, as well as on his postwar writings. Describes his cooperation, as head of the Yishuv's rescue delegation in Istanbul, with Angelo Roncalli (then the papal nuncio in the Balkans and Turkey, later Pope John XXIII) on behalf of European Jewry in 1942-44. Roncalli was perceptive to the plight of the Holocaust victims, and more than once warned the Vatican concerning the Holocaust. He sent Pius XII the "Auschwitz protocols", based on the accounts by Vrba and Wetzler in April 1944; these protocols may have moved Pius XII to write a protest letter to Horthy in June 1944. Pp. 622-632 contain letters from Barlas' archive and excerpts from his published recollections concerning this cooperation.
