Abstract:
While the role of the Żydowska Organizacja Bojowa (Jewish Fighting Organization, ŻOB) in the Warsaw ghetto uprising is well known in Israel, that of its rival group, the right-wing Żydowski Związek Wojskowy (Jewish Military Union, ŻZW) is not. The latter group - led by Pawel Frenkiel of Betar and Leon Rodal of the Revisionists - did not join the former due to ideological differences. Although ŻZW forces were better prepared and equipped, and they fought in the main battleground of Muranowska Square, the story of the uprising was told only by members of ŻOB who were on the "Aryan" side of Warsaw or who survived the uprising. Since the two leaders of ŻZW and almost all of its members were killed in the fighting, their story was not heard. Describes in detail many messages sent by members of ŻOB after the uprising and after the war, which did not mention the role of ŻZW. The very few reports by ŻZW survivors were ignored in Israel, ruled for many years by left-wing parties. "Masada shel Warsaw" (1963), by the Revisionist Chaim Lazar, was the first historical work to stress the role of ŻZW in the uprising, but this work, and a few other publications which told the story of ŻZW, failed to change the general view in Israel that the uprising was carried out entirely by left-wing movements.
