Abstract:
Discusses the factors which motivated the activities of the communist resistance group MOI, composed of immigrant Jews and centered in Paris, which functioned between March 1942-November 1943. Presents views of historians to the effect that the MOI was exploited for the party's strategic aims which did not include intervention on behalf of Jews. Recent interviews with former MOI leaders and members clarify the Jews' motivations and those of the party. The latter wished to appear as a French body fighting for France, and was therefore opposed to any action that could have been interpreted as purely Jewish (e.g. attacking Drancy or trains transporting Jews). An appeal to the population on behalf of the Jews would have had negative results, as the population was largely antisemitic. Also, psychological and sociological factors of the immigrant Jew's desire to assimilate precluded his taking action solely on behalf of Jews.
