Kurzfassung:
Frenzel (b. 1915) studied theater history in Berlin, and in 1938 submitted her dissertation, "Judengestalten auf der deutschen Bühne" (published by the Deutsche Volksverlag, 1940). She contended that German theater had always been antisemitic, thus legitimizing Nazi antisemitism. Philosemitic theater she denounced as dangerous propaganda, due to machinations of Jews who had excessive influence on the theater. The philosemitic play of an admired author like Lessing she explained away as grounded in the mistaken mentality of the period. Subsequently, she published many articles in Nazi journals on this and related themes. Rosenberg's office appointed her director of its branch for theater. In this capacity she compiled preliminary files for a dictionary of theater people of Jewish descent, based on genealogical research. After the war, she and her husband published popular reference works on German literature.
