Abstract:
In the context of the major role that Holocaust testimony has had in forming collective values in Israeli society, examines its literary uses by two very different Israeli writers: Holocaust survivor and hero Abba Kovner, and third-generation Holocaust writer Amir Guttfreund. Concludes that, for Kovner, his literary testimony, including "The Scrolls of Testimony, " fulfills a prophetic, national role, essential for the future; for Guttfreund, narrative testimony in his novel "Shoah shelanu" ("Our Holocaust, " 2000) fulfills the personal goal of solving the enigma of his own past. At the same time, Kovner's writing has an important personal dimension, and Guttfruend's a public one.
