Abstract:
Surveys the life and work of Shapira (1889-1943), who was a hasidic rabbi in Piaseczno and in Warsaw. Based on testimonies and on the book "Esh kodesh" ("Holy Fire"), a collection of his sermons delivered in 1940-43, describes his life in the Warsaw ghetto. Shapira risked his life to perform religious ceremonies and encouraged others to do the same. He felt that the ways of God could not be understood, but also that he and all Jews had the right to cry out and demand help from God. States that study of the life of Shapira, who perished in the Holocaust, should be included in Holocaust education curricula.
