Abstract:
Contends that the trauma of the Holocaust, as part of the trauma of the National-Socialist past, continues to influence post-1989 German literature dealing with the present. Using Eric Santner's notion of historical trauma, Hell illustrates her thesis with three German writers belonging to the interim generation - between the perpetrators and the younger Germans: Uwe Johnson and his "Jahrestage" (1990), Martin Walser, and Wolfgang Hilbig (b. 1941) and his "Das Provisorium" (2000). Concentrating on Hilbig, interprets his novel as exemplifying the crisis of post-Holocaust masculinity and authorship.
