Abstract:
Pinter's play "Ashes to Ashes" (1996) deals not with the Holocaust itself, but with Holocaust memory. The play's heroine, Rebecca, relates Holocaust experiences although she is too young to have had any. Her Holocaust "memories" and her total identification with them are a depth of memory in which events are remembered not in the past, but in the present. Through his play, Pinter is able to express the emotional impact of the Holocaust on later generations.
