Abstract:
Based on material found in Inquisition dossiers, discusses a small but significant group of Conversos accused of Judaizing who engaged in theological disputations with experts summoned by the Inquisition. Discusses cases from 1579 to 1665, in Spain, Portugal, Mexico, and Chile. These martyrs adopted a bold stance against Christology and the Church; they suffered in order to remain true to their view of Judaism, which was both literalistic and individualistic. Draws parallels between these disputatious anti-Catholics and Protestant dissidents in other parts of Europe; notes their anti-rabbinic tendencies as well.
