Abstract:
Discusses Maritain's activities in the sphere of Christian-Jewish relations. Maritain himself converted from Protestantism to Catholicism. Describes his pro-Zionist activities in the 1920s and quotes from his writings concerning antisemitism and the struggle against it. After World War II he became France's ambassador to the Vatican. Invited to participate in the Seelisberg Conference (1947), he sent a message (reprinted here on pp. 351-356) from Rome to the participants emphasizing the necessity for Christians to combat antisemitism after the Holocaust. Concludes that the most important points in Maritain's thought concerning Christianity and Judaism found their expression in the "Nostra aetate" declaration.
