Abstract:
At the beginning of the 1780s, many basic kabbalistic works – especially of Lurianic Kabbalah – were printed in the town of Korets. In those same years, R.David Shlomo Eybeschutz composed a kabbalistic commentary on Lamentations. Eybeschutz was a student of R. Meshulam Feibush Heller of Zbarazh, one of the first of the Beshtian Hassidim, and an important halachic decisor of his generation.Aside from the special literary form of the work, which combines "mournful" and "joyous" commentaries, it also quotes extensively from those kabbalistic works to which he had access. By tracing Eybeschutz's ever-expanding kabbalistic library, we see a sharp change in his writing. In the course of writing the composition, Eybeschutz began to make use of the recensions of Lurianic teachings found in R. Meir Poppers' Ets Hayyim and Peri Ets Hayyim, which were printed in Korets around the time of the commentary's completion. This article discusses the significance of Eybeschutz's late exposure to Lurianic kabbalah, which testifies to the degree of access which even outstanding students had to Lurianic manuscripts. The article also discusses the unique interpretation which Eybeschutz gave to Lurianic ideas concerning the role of Gentiles in the cosmic "rectification" (tiqun)after his exposure to Lurianic texts.
