Abstract:
A paper presented at a colloquium on "Mémoire ou barbarie", Paris, January-February 1988. Referring to the trial of Klaus Barbie, notes that his plea of "not guilty" reflected his Nazi ideological creed. States that Nazism went beyond racism since it not only divided the races but also took decisions on their right to live, defining the Jews as an "anti-race". By dehumanizing the victims, the Nazi executioners viewed themselves not as killers but as purifiers. Compares adherence to Nazism and the SS to adoption of a secular religion and renunciation of the restrictive individual conscience (a "Jewish invention") in favor of the freedom of the vital instinct.
