Abstract:
Contends that the American writer Thomas Wolfe's fiction, letters, and notes reveal bigotry and prejudice. He also had a strong affinity for Germans and Teutonic culture. However, on his trips to Germany in 1935 and 1936 he was horrified by the Nazi culture and its antisemitism (perhaps due to his having had a serous love affair in 1925-30 with an American Jewish woman). Upon his return to the United States he wrote an article about his trips to Germany, and stated that "anti-Semitism and humanity were incompatible".
