    Abstract: Im vergangenen Jahr erschien dieses wichtige Spätwerk von Thomas Wolfe (1900-1938) erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung. Damals nicht angezeigt, bieten wir das Buch nun zeitgleich mit dem Hörbuch (in dieser Nr.) an. Der große Gesellschaftsroman entführt in das New York der späten 1920er-Jahre. In einem noblen Apartment in der Vanderbilt Avenue versammelt sich eine illustre Gruppe auf Einladung von Esther und Frederick Jack; er ein aus Koblenz stammender Selfmade-Millionär und sie eine gefeierte Bühnenbildnerin. Eine Welt von Glamour, Geist und Geld. Doch die große Depression wirft bereits ihre Schatten voraus. Die schön gestaltete Ausgabe enthält Anmerkungen, ein Nachwort und eine editorische Notiz; so kann das Werk eingeordnet werden. Zumindest ab mittelgroßen Beständen sollten die wichtigsten Werke des Autors vorhanden sein. (rmi)

    Abstract: Contends that the American writer Thomas Wolfe's fiction, letters, and notes reveal bigotry and prejudice. He also had a strong affinity for Germans and Teutonic culture. However, on his trips to Germany in 1935 and 1936 he was horrified by the Nazi culture and its antisemitism (perhaps due to his having had a serous love affair in 1925-30 with an American Jewish woman). Upon his return to the United States he wrote an article about his trips to Germany, and stated that "anti-Semitism and humanity were incompatible".
