Abstract:
States that Meyer (1865-1930), a German historian of antiquity with a particular interest in religious history, admired the national creativity of ancient Israel but saw the message of the prophets as negative and Judaism after Nehemiah as bigoted and fanatical - the source of all the evils he abhorred in Christianity. He described the Jews' abandonment of their country as "unchivalrous"; about Diaspora Jews he repeated the usual stereotypes of their exploitation of others. After the fall of the Empire he expressed his antisemitic tendencies more openly, but he had good relations with his many Jewish students; and his own nationalism apparently led him to appreciate Zionism. In a visit to Palestine in 1926 he was favorably impressed by the settlements and the "workers' city" of Haifa, but was repelled by Tel Aviv, which seemed to copy the Diaspora style of living.
