Kurzfassung:
Criticizes Aly and Heim's viewpoint on the genesis of the Nazi Final Solution as expressed in their recent book "Vordenker der Vernichtung" (1991), according to which the genocide of Slavic peoples and of the Jews in the East was motivated by Nazi economic and demographic considerations. Based on Hans Frank's diary, traces the evolution of his views in respect to the future of the conquered peoples. In the early stages, the fate of both Poles and Jews was similar - both peoples were to be annihilated to enable the Germanization of the Polish territories. In 1943, however, Frank (as well as many top figures in the Reich) changed his mind: the Poles were to be preserved as a source of labor for the Reich. For the Jews, Frank's plans changed only for the worse: as the most fundamental Social Darwinian enemies of Germany, they were to be destroyed urgently, in view of the deteriorating military situation. Racial and completely irrational considerations, rather than a "rational" drive for "modernization" in the East, stood behind the Final Solution.
