Kurzfassung:
A revised version of a lecture delivered at a conference in memory of the Israeli historian Shmuel Ettinger (1919-1988), held in Jerusalem in November 2008. Discusses the views of Ettinger, noting that while some historians saw modern antisemitism as having begun in the late 19th century, he saw it as a continuing phenomenon from ancient times. He felt that Christian religious antisemitism, with its negative stereotypes, served as the basis for the modern racial version. Volkov states that she herself, unlike Ettinger, has generally focused on the differences between religious and racial antisemitism. However, some German historians (e.g. Hans-Ulrich Wehler, Ulrich Herbert, Nicholas Berg) have recently discussed the significant role of traditional Christian antisemitism in the Holocaust. Some recent studies focus on Christian antisemitism in the Weimar period, connecting it to the Holocaust. This new historiography, like that of Ettinger, supports the intentionalist approach to the Holocaust and can also explain continuing antisemitism.
