Abstract:
Based on the published and unpublished results of several projects of interviews conducted with Jews and non-Jews who were students at the University of Vienna at the time of the "Anschluss", reflects on the nature of autobiographical narration and on the relationship between the interviewer and the interviewee. The awareness of the interviewees in regard to the significance of the "Anschluss" in their lives varied widely, as did its influence on their careers. Most of the Jews who were interviewed had to end or interrupt their studies and go into exile, where, however, many succeeded in careers they had not originally envisaged. Most of the non-Jews remained at the University and completed their studies; they did not experience 1938 as a fateful break in their lives.
