Christianity and antisemitism History To 1500
Kurzfassung:
Discusses three disputations held in Western Europe - France (Paris, 1240) and Spain (Barcelona, 1263 and Tortosa, 1413-14) - and their antisemitic biases. The arbiters were Christian rulers, a main target was the Talmud, and conversion by persuasion or force was the goal. Compares these with Eastern European disputations from before the 10th century, which were trilateral (involving Islam as well) and were presided over by neutral parties, i.e. pagan leaders who were seeking a monotheistic religion to unite their peoples. Two disputations involved the Khazars (Itil, 740 and Derbent, 860-861) and the third the Kievan state (988). Unlike their Western European counterparts, the Eastern European disputations did not involve antisemitism. Notes that the Eastern disputations, especially the one in Kiev which led to the adoption of Eastern Orthodoxy, had important historical consequences for the region.
