Abstract:
Analyzes reactions of Soviet authorities to the Holocaust, as reflected in news regarding Nazi atrocities on Soviet territories published during the war and afterwards in government-controlled newspapers ("Pravda", "Izvestiya", "Krasnaya Zvezda"). In general, the Soviet press emphasized the anti-Slav nature of the Nazi policy and atrocities, even when the majority of the victims were Jews. The presentation of the Nazi acts as directed primarily against Slavs was meant to boost motivation to fight the Nazis. References to the Nazi description of the war as a war directed against Judeo-Bolshevik elements would have helped Nazi propaganda. However, the suppression of information regarding the uniqueness of the anti-Jewish Nazi acts - even in the postwar era - stemmed from prevalent antisemitic views among Soviet leaders.
