Abstract:
Links the iconography of the Purification of the Virgin in Renaissance Italy with changes in attitude towards the Jews and with demands to provide them with a distinguishing mark. During the 14th century, the number of Jewish communities in northern Italy increased. Jews mixed freely with Gentiles, and were not distinguished by their dress. However, a campaign by San Bernardino of Siena and the Observant friars (15th century) led to social segregation and marking with signs like earrings for women and the yellow veils of prostitutes. Jewish usurers, like the Gentile prostitutes, provided a despised but essential service.
