Abstract:
Rafael Lemkin, who coined the term "genocide", never singled out the Holocaust from the other cases of genocide. Many modern scholars, however, are inclined to consider the Holocaust as a singular event in human history and have linked it only with the European antisemitic tradition. Lemkin's approach calls on scholars to set the Holocaust in a wider historical context: e.g. racial fears and policies in prewar Europe; European colonialism and the mass killing of African and American peoples; and Germany's war in the East and its plans of racial, ethnic, and economic restructuring of the occupied territories.
