Abstract:
Analyzes the situation and conduct of the Jewish population in the Soviet-annexed part of Poland, in order to verify the validity of the cliche that Jews welcomed the Soviet occupation of southeastern Poland in 1939 and collaborated with the new administration. Based on testimonies and official figures, states that Jewish behavior and rapport with the Soviets changed over time, and was different for various social groups. Contends that Jews suffered more than other ethnic groups as a result of Sovietization. There is no systematic evidence that would support the claims of massive Jewish participation in the Soviet administration. Remarks on Jewish resistance against Soviet repression and frequent refusal to accept Soviet identity cards, followed by forced deportation to remote areas of the USSR.
