Abstract:
Discussing Weber's conception of ethnicity, and its links with his involvement in German nationalist politics, refers to his negative stereotypes of the Jews, detected especially in his book "Ancient Judaism". Argues that Weber's approach to the ancient Jews as a pariah people with a tendency to self-isolation, and characterized by an "ethic of ressentiment", arose from his anti-Jewish biases. Weber identified the Jews as posing a threat to national culture because they are bearers of a different ethos, not easily integrated into the dominant culture, and they threaten to decompose the nation state, especially in revolutionary times.
