Abstract:
The politics of "shtadlanut" (a Hebrew term for solicitation of the government by prominent Jews) reached a crisis in the 1880s, when Baron Horace Günzburg and his associates were unable to defend the Jews against pogroms and later to prevent the limitation of Jewish rights in Russia and the expulsion of Jews from Moscow in 1891. The Interior Minister Ignatiev succeeded in carrying out his antisemitic policies regarding the Jews. The crisis in the politics of shtadlanut brought about a shift in the Jewish initiatives, from rich solicitors to the more democratic and broader Jewish movements.
