Abstract:
Discusses the post-Auschwitz concept of God in the philosophy of Jonas (1903-1993), a German Jewish philosopher and former student of Heidegger. Unlike Heidegger, who considered Hiroshima as the beginning of a new era, Jonas developed a new theodicy based on the radical evil revealed by Auschwitz, and on a remodeled concept of a weak God who cannot prevent the evil. Argues that Jonas' concept contains the danger of a theological justification of Auschwitz.
