Abstract:
An expanded version of a paper delivered in German at an international conference on "Jews and Poverty, " University of Leipzig, September 1997. Focuses on the welfare activities of the Reichsvereinigung, which was created in 1939. The main goal of the Nazis in setting up this organization was to oust Jews from the state welfare system and to establish a separate one for them. The Nazis needed such a system because growing pauperization of the German Jews hindered their emigration. The conditions in which the RV began its work were unfavorable - the communities were ruined by the "Kristallnacht" pogrom. Deals with the problems confronted by the RV, its ways of mobilizing money for relief, efforts to alleviate the plight of the needy by organizing work brigades for them, etc. The deportations which began in 1941-42 dealt a heavy blow to the RV's welfare activities. Relief work under the conditions of the Holocaust proved to be Sisyphean - most of Germany's Jews were deported and perished.
