Abstract:
The documents now released to scholars comprise the Vatican's diplomatic correspondence concerning Vatican-German relations during the papacy of Pius XI (1922-1939). Presents the text of Edith Stein's letter to the Pope (1933) asking for his intervention against Nazi persecution of Jews, and mentions that Jewish religious leaders also petitioned the Pope. Edith Stein received only an indirect and vague reply. But Secretary of State Pacelli (later Pope Pius XII) asked the papal nuncius to Germany, Cesare Orsenigo, to see what could be done. In 1934 Pacelli warned the German government against racist ideology, and in 1935, in a public address, he condemned the "superstition of blood and race". Concludes that the Vatican was by no means silent, although, as pope, Pacelli may have practiced restraint for fear of reprisals against Catholics.
