Abstract:
The view of the Israeli rabbi Zvi Yehudah Kook (1891-1982) in regard to the Holocaust focused on its impact on the Jewish nation as a whole. He saw the Holocaust as a cruel but necessary blow delivered in order to remove the Jews from the impurities of the diaspora, to which they had become accustomed. Like a medical operation, it was necessary in order to ensure the health of the nation. Although he was aware of the great suffering of European Jews, Rabbi Kook focused on the positive outcome of the Holocaust, the return of the Jews to Israel, in order to incorporate it into his messianic view of the post-Holocaust period as one of redemption.
