Abstract:
In Old Poland, Jesuit college students were known to harass Jews if they met them on the streets. Most of the colleges were founded in the royal towns. In the private town of Ostróg (now Ostroh, Ukraine) there was a Jesuit college which was founded in 1626. Describes various versions of a riot which took place there in 1726, in which Jesuit students, Tatars (who were in the town guard), and Jews were involved. It probably began with harassment of the Jews, but during the riots a Jesuit student was killed by a Tatar. Many versions from court files are available in archives, but there is no description of the events from the Jewish side. The documents show that the owner of the town was interested in the security of his Jews and protected them. Notes that other landowners acted in the same way, and this was one of the reasons why Jews tended to move from royal to magnates' estates.
