Abstract:
Discusses the way that the late-17th-century Polish king's administrator of large estates and tax collector Becal featured as a central figure in the conflict between the magnates and the monarch. Economic rivalry between Christians and Jews led to an attempt to punish Becal for blasphemy and for misadministration. He was not found guilty, but the affair was detrimental to the Jews in Poland. Decrees were passed, especially against Jews who administered tax revenues, and the nobles attempted to raise the Jewish poll tax. The affair of the king's "factor" was a bargaining chip in the contest for the election of the next Polish king.
