Abstract: Discusses three versions of a Hebrew liturgical poem ("piyyut") by a 13th-century poet from Provence, Isaac ha-Seniri, which describes the ritual stoning of the Jewish quarter or street during Holy Week and the confinement of Jewish residents to their homes. This practice was widespread in southern France, Spain, and Italy. Interprets the stoning as a Christian sacred drama of setting communal boundaries. However, the poem was not merely a lament, but also contained a strong element of anti-Christian polemic: the condemnation of Christian violence reflected a Jewish sacred drama in which the Jews would be vindicated and their enemies defeated. One version of the poem has an element of optimism, of a transition from violence to peace. Notes that when the violence exceeded ritual bounds, the Jews took measures to put a halt to it. Includes the Hebrew text of Isaac's "piyyut" (pp. 133-135).
Note: Examines three versions of a piyyut by Isaac ha-Seniri, a 13th-century poet from Provence.

Abstract: Certain attitudes and interests associated with the genre of 12th-century vernacular romance appear in Hebrew prose texts of the period, e.g. in the Hebrew narratives on the Crusades and on Jewish martyrdom. Explores the connections between these writings, with particular attention to those narrative techniques that allowed an exploration of inner conflict and motive, hence a new sense of self.

Abstract: Medieval Jewish literature (both prose and the more extensive poetic martyrological laments) reveals a shift in the representation of female martyrs. In the 11th century they were described as active, even egalitarian, models of sacrifice and self-sacrifice. The shift that occurred parallels a historical shift by the end of the 12th century from spontaneous (often Crusader) violence that often ended in the death of Jews to anti-Jewish legislation and ecclesiastical and social policies that led to potential or actual conversion. Jewish prose and poetry then reveal a trend to increasingly depict Jewish women (when they are depicted at all) as vulnerable to religious and physical defilement (baptism and rape). Thus, Jewish women who cross the borders of the Jewish community are seen as bringing danger upon themselves and other Jews. On the part of the Jewish male authors, this reveals a new distrust of their women's ability to resist Christian pressures, both physical and religious.

Keywords: Meir ben Elijah of Norwich ; Antisemitism History Middle Ages, 500-1500 ; Piyyutim
Abstract: In contrast to the accepted view of the lack of Jewish martyrological writing in medieval England (as compared to northern France and Germany), discusses a 13th-century Hebrew liturgical poem by Meir of Norwich, "Oyevi bi-me'erah tikov" ("Put a Curse on My Enemy"). This work reflects literary talent and the influence of Spanish Jewish poets of the 12th century. It is one of only two known Anglo-Jewish poems dealing with persecution, that at the time took such forms as local and collective violence, defamation, blood libel, destruction of Jewish books, pillage, imprisonment, economic punishment, exile, etc. The poem expresses religious doubt and a loss of trust in community leaders. It refers to conversion and to messianic hopes. The poem of Meir, whose identity is not clear, expresses local details of Jewish experience. Pp. 156-162 contain the original Hebrew text and an English translation by Einbinder.
Note: With the Hebrew poem, its translation into English and an edition of the text.
