Abstract:
Divides Jewish chroniclers' reactions to Luther and the Reformation into two periods. The first expressed enthusiasm for his initial tolerance of the Jews. Luther's subsequent attacks on Jews, followed by persecution, led to anger on the part of the Jews. However, since most of the later writers considered here lived under Catholic regimes and witnessed the violence of the Counter-Reformation, they rejoiced more at the downfall of the Catholic Church and tended to ignore individual instances of Protestant persecution of the Jews.
