Abstract:
As early as 1897, the Zionist leader Vladimir (Zeev) Jabotinsky warned Jews of a coming destruction in Eastern Europe, and in the 1930s he tried to convince the Jews to emigrate. Although he did not foresee the extent of the Holocaust, he repeatedly emphasized that the deep-rooted hostility of local populations posed a threat to the Jews. Later, during the Holocaust, the local population (like those in Jedwabne) sometimes instigated the murder of Jews. In his book of essays "Hazit ha-milhamah shel am Yisrael" ("The Jewish War Front"), written shortly before his death in 1940, Jabotinsky also warned that surviving Jews who returned would be met with hostility.
