Abstract:
Describes, first, the harmonious relations between China and Judaism, mainly based on the past experiences of the Kaifeng Jewish community. Then proceeds to discusses Christian theology in other Asian countries in the past and in the present. Antisemitism was imported into the Orient from Europe by Christian missionaries. Among these "importers" was the Jesuit Alexandre de Rhodes (1593-1660), whose catechism and passion plays spread anti-Jewish stereotypes in Vietnam. Aloysius Pieris (1934- ) is a Sri Lankan Jesuit theologian whose liberation writings contain anti-Jewish elements, as do those of Choan-Seng Song (1929- ), a Presbyterian Taiwanese theologian. Despite such examples, suggests that contemporary Asian Christian liberation theology might provide ways for Jewish and Christian post-Holocaust theology to overcome remaining Christian antisemitism, as well as to deal with the challenge of power now facing the Jewish state.
