Abstract:
In 1348 the Jews of Frankfurt appealed to Pope Clement VI to issue a bull (which he did) to protect them from the pogroms occasioned by the Black Death. Ca. 1450, a scribe in Frankfurt copied this bull into the official records and accompanied it with a caricature showing a Jew bribing the Pope. Another Jew sits astride the Pope's shoulders; drawn with a swinish nose, he perhaps denotes the Devil. In that case, the Pope who accepts bribes and protects the Jews might be the Antichrist.
