Kurzfassung:
This contribution summarizes the development of National Socialism as a research topic in the field of sociology in the German-speaking world. We begin by describing what led us in 2012 to controversially debate this issue with several experts in a podium discussion, which in turn served as the basis for the continuation of this debate - a sort of initial stocktaking - in book form. We then briefly examine what research on National Socialism has been conducted since then in German-language sociology. Finally, we present some ideas on the contributions we believe German-language sociology can make to this field and why we continue to find it important that - despite all the welcome internationalism and interdisciplinarity of the field - sociology in the German-speaking world engage more explicitly and recognizably with the Holocaust and society under National Socialism.
