Abstract:
In 1883 Stöcker, the antisemitic politician and preacher, was invited by the German YMCA to speak in London. When informed of Stöcker's record by a Jewish delegation, the Lord Mayor of London refused to preside and Lord Shaftesbury, who had originally headed the reception committee, dissociated himself from the visit. Stöcker's public meetings were broken up by exiled German socialists, but he addressed a private Conservative club, where he accused Jewish immigrants in Germany of controlling the press and inciting against Christianity. The press and the Anglican Church generally condemned him. Although Stöcker believed the visit had helped to stir up the "Jewish question" in London, it was generally judged as a failure.
