Abstract:
The regeneration symbolism attached to the plant tuft is at the origin of the importance attached to the acanthus calyx in the Herodian funerary art. The corpus of representations of the acanthus cup, although limited to eight examples, shows a great diversity in the treatment of the theme and the style of the representations. More than the mere repetition of a decorative motif from classical Greek art, it was a matter for the craftsmen to develop an image that corresponded to the beliefs in immortality and resurrection prevalent in Judaism at the time.
