Abstract:
A paper delivered at the first Emanuel Ringelblum symposium, June 1987. Relates the professional and public activities of Ringelblum before and during the war. He was active on behalf of the Polish Jews who were expelled from Germany in 1938 and abandoned on the frontier, when Polish authorities refused to admit them. During the war he organized a secret archive in the Warsaw ghetto under the code name "Oneg Shabbat", understanding the uniqueness of the Holocaust and the need to record testimonies and preserve other documentary material. The archives were buried several months prior to the liquidation of the ghetto; two-thirds of them were recovered after the war. Describes, also, Ringelblum's activities as an historian and active member of various underground political groups.
