Abstract:
A survey of the characteristic features of modern Austrian antisemitism. Mentions the evolution of the two main trends: Christian-social (first represented by Karl Lueger), and nationalist pan-German (absorbed in the 1930s by Nazi ideology). Claims that Austrian national identity after World War II was based on the refusal to accept any responsibility for the Nazi period and the Holocaust. The Waldheim Affair is seen as proof that latent Austrian antisemitism can become public and manifest. Explains Kreisky's paradoxical political success which was due, among other factors, to his consent to avoid a critical approach to Austria's Nazi past.
